For the first time in Sheffield, award-winning theatre company Tribe Arts bring their flagship participatory format ‘Tribe Talks’ to the Festival of Debate. Using the partition of India and its historic impact as a backdrop, this event, which includes a screening of long-form spoken-word film The Ode to Partition, will unpack the realities and hard truths of racism and Britishness in what is set to be a lively conversation.

Prepare to come with your questions, ideas, impulses and participation and contribute in a meaningful, first-of-its-kind frank conversation about race and its damning (ir)relevance to British society and the world. The event will offer a chance to speak to the creative team involved in the making of The Ode to Partition.

Hosted by Tribe Arts.

Speaker

Tribe’s story started in 2013 when a cohort of black and Asian actors were cast together in a local play. The coming-together proved fateful. Their frustration with the negative portrayal and misrepresentation of their stories on stage culminated in Tribe Arts being born.

Now spearheaded by Co-Artistic Directors’ Tajpal Rathore & Samran Rathore, Tribe Arts continues to create work which responds to current trends and political conversations, contributing to contemporary British black & Asian theatre, and the cultural life of the UK.

Speaker

Samran Rathore is an actor, playwright and published poet. He graduated from the University of Leeds with a masters in race and resistance, and has worked creatively for the past ten years.

Speaker

Tajpal Rathore is an actor, writer, producer, director, dramaturg and cultural commentator, with 20 years experience in the creative industries, having worked across TV, film, radio and theatre.
