Not everyone reaches old age with the same degree of wellbeing. Throughout a lifetime, some people are prevented from accessing basic services, good working conditions, or fully participating in society because of who they are. These issues disproportionally affect many, if not all, racially minoritised communities. This is unjust and unfair.
Since October 2023, the University of Sheffield, the Rotherham Ethnic Minority Alliance and SADACCA have collaborated on a research project – Ethnicity and Unequal Ageing in Rotherham and Sheffield – that’s trying to improve our understanding of how these experiences around inclusion and exclusion play out for people from different ethnic groups throughout their lives.
As part of this project, around 40 racially minoritised older people living in Rotherham and Sheffield took part in 12 weeks of creative arts-based workshops, facilitated by ROAR, Utopia Theatre and Lora Krasteva to explore what needs to change to foster inclusive ageing based on their specific grounded experiences. The workshops culminated in the performances Strangers No More and Echoes of Time, captured on film by Sean Lovell and Ai Narapol.
At this event, the workshop participants will come together again. Telling stories through theatre, song, dance and poetry, they will invite the audience to explore what needs to change to foster inclusive ageing in South Yorkshire.
