Imagining a World Without Fossil Fuels

In partnership with Stop Rosebank Sheffield

Climate change is arguably the most pressing political issue of our time. The devastating consequences of inaction – on nature, on all of our lives, and on generations to come – cannot be overstated. To adequately deal with this existential threat, wholesale systemic change is needed. The entire global economy must end its reliance on fossil fuels and rapidly move to a system built on renewable energy.

This workshop will focus on the urgent need to abandon fossil fuels and transition to a greener, cleaner and more sustainable economy. It will begin with a chaired conversation between climate activists who are campaigning to end our dependence on fossil fuels. Based on their research and experience, they’ll outline the practical steps necessary to create this systemic shift and how we can work together to bring it about. After this chaired conversation, the session will move on to a community discussion between attendees. This discussion will encourage people to imagine a world without fossil fuels and consider the role they can play in forging a just transition to this new society.

The workshop is aimed at experienced activists as well as those who are totally new to the climate movement.

Speaker

Alice Swift has been an anti-capitalist climate justice activist for 15 years. She co-founded the fossil fuel divestment movement in 2013, helped stop fracking with Reclaim the Power, and has been fighting against coal and fossil gas with Ende Gelände in Germany since 2015. Most recently, she has been working on the Stop Rosebank campaign against North Sea oil and gas and the campaign to stop deforested trees (biomass) being used to generate electricity.

Jemima Elliott is a freelance journalist and climate organiser. She campaigns against new oil and gas with Stop Rosebank and for a fairer fashion industry as University Community Organiser with Remake. She has written for The Sunday Times, Shado, The Tab UK, and Lighthouse Books.

Daniel Therkelsen speaks from over a decade of experience fighting fossil fuels, from the grassroots through to policy work in the UK, South Africa, and Nigeria. As director and a campaigner at Coal Action Network, Daniel reminds us that the UK still mines and uses coal, but also shows the path towards a just transition away from coal.
