Community Ownership walkshop

Sheffield city centre is home to an enormously diverse range of buildings, from high-profile empty spaces like the crumbling but much-loved Salvation Army Citadel, to the Town Hall and the former Debenhams on The Moor. A range of high-density multi-storey new builds have sprouted up across West Bar and St. Vincents, and numerous less high-profile sites house an eclectic range of creative organisations in meanwhile spaces.

Key issues in the city, as in many other places in the country, are access to affordable spaces to live and work in and secure tenure, and provision of these within the context of stretched budgets and a climate emergency. In addition, how do we prevent the city becoming developed to suit an external investment market that prevents community wealth building and long-term placemaking?

By using a game strategy, we’ll explore the city centre through a number of key sites and prompt playful and exploratory solutions that might join some dots, facilitate discussion and suggest alternative ways of owning, working and living in the city.

Led by members of Sheffield Community Land Trust. Meeting at 18-20 Union St, Sheffield City Centre
