In partnership with Burngreave Clean Air Campaign
This event invites a public discussion on Illegal levels of dangerous air pollution in Burngreave and Fir Vale. We hope to explore the issue of why air pollution is an urgent issue for this area and how we might tackle it together. There will be a panel opening up the discussion, and time for everyone to talk in smaller groups. Everyone is very welcome.
Burngreave Clean Air Campaign monitors nitrogen dioxide levels at seven sites in Burngreave where life expectancy can be ten years less than in affluent areas of Sheffield. Some of our local nitrogen dioxide results are among the highest in the whole of Sheffield, and way over the legal maximum. Air pollution, largely resulting from motor traffic, represents a severe health risk to the health of the children and adults who live, work and go to school in our neighbourhoods.
In children, air pollution can cause failure of brain and lung development, asthma, and respiratory infections. In adults, it can cause chronic obstructive airways disease (COPD), heart disease, cancer, stroke, dementia, diabetes, infertility and a range of other problems.
This debate, featuring a range of local speakers, will focus on what can be done to improve this situation in Page Hall, Burngreave, and surrounding neighbourhoods.
