Corrosion: The $2.5 Trillion Dollar Problem (Not to Mention the Environmental & Human Cost)

Corrosion is a dangerous and extremely costly problem with serious, wide-ranging implications. Some of the effects of corrosion include a serious deterioration of natural and historic monuments, increasing the risk of catastrophic equipment failures.

Recent examples include the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which occurred due to corrosion and was considered to be the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. Corrosion was also a leading factor behind the collapse of the Morandi bridge in Genoa, Italy, in 2018, which cost the lives of 43 people. Without effective solutions, corrosion issues remain an unsustainable threat to the planet and lead to the consumption of natural resources at large scale. There is a timely and critical need to find new solutions to tackle the vast problem of corrosion.
